Discovery Through a Scientific Lens

Barrett's Project Discovery & Project Interaction teachers, & ELL, Reading, & Classroom Teachers were awarded a $10,000 Toyota TAPESTRY Science grant. The 2006-07 grant supported student participation in lessons that incorporate the Jason Project, NASA Explorer School experiences, Virginia Science and culminated with the creation of video podcasts by fourth graders. Recently science podcasts created by 2nd grade students have been added to this blog.

Barrett Elementary School Awarded $10,000 Toyota Grant

















Barrett Elementary School has been awarded a $10,000
Toyota TAPESTRY science grant. Barrett is the only
school in Virginia to receive the award for 2006. The grant
will be used to implement their project, “Carpe Camera
- Seize the Media through a Scientific Lens: Video
Podcasting Student Inquiries to the Worldwide
Community".

As part of Barrett’s project, fourth grade teachers at
Barrett will engage students in exciting inquiry-based
hands-on/minds-on lessons that incorporate the Jason
Expedition, NASA Explorer School experiences and the
Virginia Science Standards of Learning, including the
explicit teaching of reading and thinking strategies.
Students will participate in interactive video
conferences with the NASA Langley Research Center.
Each unit will culminate with the creation of a video
podcast that will be available for free viewing from
the iTunes website.
